Hot chocolate (high in protein)

Whether it’s hot chocolate or a smoothie, this is my go-to high-protein drink, adapted to the season.

I often enjoy it for breakfast when I’m heading to the office, or as a healthy dessert option.

With winter approaching, you might not be in the mood for a cold smoothie in the morning. This warm, nourishing drink is the perfect alternative—comforting, satisfying, and packed with protein to keep you energized.

Hot chocolate ingredients

  • 2 tbsp of protein powder (I use the chocolate Amazonia one which is low FODMAPs – available at the Chemist Warehouse)
  • 1 tbsp of cacao powder
  • 2-4 tbsp of buckwheat flakes to thicken it
  • 1 pinch of chili (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs (optional)

Option 1: Add all the ingredients in a cup and pour boiling water or milk and mix well

Option 2: blend all the ingredients together. You can add a banana or some berries. Drink it as it is or heat it up and drink it warm/hot.

Hot chocolate ideas and notes

  • Use cooked kumara of pumpkin to make a high protein latte Korean style
  • Use soy Plus protein milk or milk protein for an extra protein intake. You can try to froth it for a creamier texture
  • Buckwheat flakes are available in Piko store. Alternatively you can use rolled oat but be aware the recipe won’t be gluten free anymore
  • You can add cinnamon and/or vanilla extract
